Gardening is a great way to add a bit of greenery to your outdoor space as well as add some delicious vegetables to your diet. However, it can be a bit daunting if you don’t think you have enough space to grow these things.
But, with the right planning, you too can be creating your own container garden. Today, we’ve got some of the easiest vegetables to grow in pots to help you start your next summer adventure. Be sure to check the amount of sun your space gets in order to give your plants the optimal amount of lighting.
If this is the very first time you’re trying to grow container vegetables, then the tomato is the perfect place for you to start. Tomatoes are an easy plant to grow. All you need is a large container and some stakes for support. If you don’t have a ton of room for a large container, consider trying your hand at cherry tomatoes, which won’t need nearly as large of a container.
2) Green onions
This one is perfect to add to containers with other plants, like cabbage. All you need when it comes to growing green onions is six inches of dirt depth and regular watering. Because of the shallow root system, these can be grown either inside or out. And an added bonus is you can start your next round of green onions by cutting the bottom roots from a green onion at the store.
While squash can be an easy plant to grow, it’s important to start with how big it can grow. The plants need a large container as well as a lot of space to spread out. But they are incredibly satisfying to see when you start getting your first round of vegetables from the plant. When you’re picking your options, go with something like a zucchini or summer squash that is smaller and won’t tip the container.
Whether you’re looking to grow hot peppers or a more sweet option, both will result in a delicious ending. Peppers tend to want warmer soil, so if there’s a particularly cold front be sure to bring them in for the night. Make sure your peppers have good drainage and consistent water as they can be a bit particular about the soil.
You’re going to want to plant these in early spring. But don’t worry. Once the crop is done use the container for something else. And when the summer growing season is done, start another batch of peas. You will need to put in stakes to support your plants as they grow to keep them from breaking.
The cucumber is often grown in a container to help give them the heat they prefer. The soil in a pot will heat up faster than that in the ground. However, it also means you’ll need to check the plant regularly as they love the water. There are two main varieties of cucumber and both are easy to grow in a container. Though it’s important to know which variety you choose to grow. One will need a trellis or tomato cage.
If you’re looking for something that grows quickly, then this is the plant for you. Radishes typically have a growing season of about just a month. And an added bonus, they don’t need much space. Like the green onions, the radish only needs 4 to 6 inches of dirt space. There are also a lot of varieties to choose from, so have some fun when picking out which ones you want to grow.
